All Is Bright

Posted by Laurel

Merry Christmas Friends! This morning is a joy to the senses: the freshly brewed cups of joe, the ripping of beautifully wrapped packages, the squeals of delight, the snapping of photos, the warmth of the fireplace.  In amongst all of this, Pam and i feel blessed to be with our husbands, kids and families. In light of so many people’s recent losses, we cling to all we have been blessed with. One of which is you, the friends that have both challenged and encouraged us..and ultimately been our cheerleaders on this crazy journey we have begun in the cyber world. We wish you a truly meaningful Christmas, filled with love, laughter, and the beauty of stepping back from the chaos of “life”, if even for a moment!

May your day be merry and bright… xoxo

Christmas Decorating ~ Rustic Glam!

Posted by Pam

This week we decided to skip the Friday Find to focus on Christmas decor since Christmas is only a month and 2 days away!  Our friends to the south are hitting all of the sales today for Black Friday, hopefully filling their baskets with great deals on Christmas gifts.  One of the biggest trends in Christmas decor this year is something we’ve coined “Rustic Glam”.  I’m loving this style combining natural elements such as wood, branches, bark, paper and natural fibers with sparkle from glass, mirror, crystal or glitter!

We saw many stunning Christmas displays in New York that epitomized Rustic Glam….

I loved this display in the ABC Carpet & Home in Chelsea…

I love the chandelier juxtaposed against the natural branches.

These birdhouse ornaments at ABC Carpet & Home were too cute..love the subtle shimmer!

Love the white birch branches displaying these ornaments!

Bloomingdales on the Upper East Side had some awesome Rustic Glam ornaments…they called this look “Nature’s Jingle”!

The glittery acorn is my fave!

You don’t have to go shopping in New York to achieve this look, although that sounds like a pretty good idea to me!!!

Laurel included this ornament from West Elm in her post on ornaments (click here) last week.  This owl is a perfect example of rustic glam!

$19.92 for a set of four. Photo courtesy of West Elm.

Here’s Restoration Hardware‘s take on “Rustic Glam”…

I love the rustic trees paired with the shiny mercury glass balls and the lights too! Photo courtesy of Restoration Hardware.

I found a similar tree at HomeSense for $59.99.  Jason sprayed it for me with Krylon Glitter Spray from Michael’s (yes, Jason did it for me as most DIY’s I try don’t end well…Jason refers to me as “craft impaired”).   He used both silver and gold to give the tree a subtle champagne shimmer…

On our family room tree this year I added shimmery brown owls that look like they are made out of bark from Hudson Madison.  The green sparkly bird with feather tail was a dollar store find…

This look works in most interiors as it combines both formal and informal styles!  Another great thing about “Rustic Glam” is that you can achieve this look by adding to what you already may have for Christmas decorations.  Have a lot of sparkle already?  Add some rustic elements.  Have a more natural look, add a few shiny ornaments.   Go on..try it…you’ll like it!

Our Favourite Christmas Morning Brunch Recipes

Posted by Pam

So, I’m not the kind of mom who regularly gets up and makes the kids a hearty, homemade breakfast.  It’s usually toast or cereal around here!  But Christmas morning, I love to make a special breakfast that we enjoy as a family after opening up gifts around the tree.  I know that Laurel feels the same way!

It’s only 9 sleeps until Christmas morning, so we thought we’d share a few of our favourite Christmas brunch recipes so you can start planning your menu and do your grocery shopping!

I do prefer to make things that I can do a lot of the prep the day before so that I’m not in the kitchen the whole morning and you can do that with many of these recipes.

1.  I love an egg dish and I’ve made this Sausage and Egg Casserole with Sun Dried Tomatoes and Mozzarella and everyone goes crazy for it.  The great thing is you cook up the sausage mixture the day before, so it’s very quick to finish up and get into the oven in the morning.  It’s not a dry egg dish either and not full of bread.

2.  German Pancake with Buttermilk Syrup - this sometimes is our dinner when Jason’s not home.  The kids absolutely love this!  This is not the best recipe for a large group as you have to blend up the ingredients just before you bake it and you need to bake it in 9″ x 13″ pans, so oven space can be challenging.  While I am blending the pancake ingredients, I put the pan with about 1 tablespoon of butter in the oven and let it get hot before I add the pancake batter.  This helps it to come out of the pan easier.

The buttermilk syrup can be made a couple of days in advance.  BE CAREFUL WHEN BOILING IT….it will boil over unless you watch it carefully and put it a much larger pan than you think you’ll need.  The syrup can be reheated in the microwave before serving.  This syrup is great on waffles, pancakes and ice cream as well!

3.  Land of Nod Cinnamon Buns – these are a long time favorite!  A staple at Jason’s parents for Christmas brunch.  The great thing is all of the prep is done the night before.  You just pop them into the oven in the morning.  It’s a really good idea to place a cookie sheet under the Bundt pan to catch the drippings or you may end up with burnt sugar on the bottom of your oven!  I also prefer to use pecans instead of the raisins.

4.  Last year I made Apple Butter Pancakes with Cherry Sauce for Boxing Day Brunch.  I loved that I could doctor up a pancake mix….I fooled everyone.  I loved the cherry sauce for on top!

5.  Eggnog French Toast with Cranberry Apple Compote – we want to try this one…maybe for our brunch in Hawaii.  We love that you can prep it the night before and highly rated recipes on Epicurious have never disappointed us.   I would be tempted to serve it with the Buttermilk Syrup from the German Pancake recipe above.

6.  One of our family faves is this recipe that I was introduced to when I married Jason.  His mom, Loraine, has been making this for the last 18 years for either Christmas or Boxing Day brunch.  Once again, you can make the sauce the day before, so it takes just minutes to assemble in the morning before you bake it.  This recipe is awesome for large groups!  Here’s a tip…..split the English muffins apart, butter them, place them on a cookie sheet and then put them under the broiler for a couple of minutes (don’t leave them too long!).  This is a super quick way to toast them for a crowd!  This recipe has been passed down from friends and family, so I cannot give credit as the originator is not known!!

Morning Egg Bake

  • 6 slices of bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 1 can cream of mushroom or cream of chicken soup (use both kinds if doubling the recipe)
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon prepared mustard
  • 3/4 cup grated cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chopped parsley
  • Pepper to taste
  • 10 eggs

Saute onion in reserved bacon drippings.  Add soup, milk and mustard.  Cook until smooth.  Add cheese, parsley and pepper and cook until heated through (this can be done the day before and then cooled and stored in fridge).

Pour 1 cup sauce into baking dish (I use a 9″ x 13″ coated with nonstick spray).  Break eggs into sauce.  Spoon remaining sauce around eggs and spinkle bacon on top.  Bake at 350 degrees F for 15 to 20 minutes or until set.  Spoon over toasted English muffins or toasted bread slices.

7.  Ina’s Maple Scones – ok, so these you need to make the day of, but they are SO good.  Laurel made these for the first time about 12 years ago, and I love them just as much today!  The glaze for these makes them taste divine!

8.  Eggnog Muffins – I just made these for our bootcamp brunch (yes, workout and then eat!) and I got great reviews!!  I multiplied the recipe by 1 and 1/2 and I added 1 cup of dried cranberries.  Use freshly grated nutmeg…it makes a big difference.  I was worried they might be dry, but they weren’t.  And you can really taste the rum!

https://docs.google.com/a/sugarplumsisters.com/document/d/1m7XWbfytqVYhlPa6gSJGfAJXvKf-xCsnUFm7dEbmzC0/edit?hl=en_US

It always nice to add a few special touches to your Christmas brunch.

Fresh squeezed orange juice is a favorite here…but I do buy it.

Hot apple cider – I combine about 2/3 apple juice and 1/3 cranberry juice.  Add in a bit of brown sugar, some cinnamon stick and a few cloves.  Add in a sliced up orange (rind on) and bring to a simmer.  Simmer for about 20 min.  Strain and it’s ready!!  To make it even more special, top with whipped cream and drizzle with caramel!

I also love eggnog lattes.  If you are making them at home, use 1/2 milk and 1/2 eggnog, otherwise it is was too rich and thick.

You don’t need to go crazy with too many dishes….pick maybe an egg dish and serve it with a baked good and some fresh fruit, or opt for a carb dish such as the German Pancake, fry up some bacon and serve with fruit!  Enjoy!

Christmas in New York

Posted by Pam

Laurel and I were asked to plan the Christmas party for my dad and my husband’s company party. Several years ago we changed the format of the Christmas party from a formal, sit down type banquet to a more informal cocktail party. My parents have been willing to host the party the last number of years at their home. People seem more relaxed in a home environment versus a stuffy, sterile banquet room or hall.

The night after our blog launch party we decided we needed to come up with a theme…it was only a month until this party!!! Scott came up with Christmas in Mexico…Lo and I loved it but Dad doesn’t like Mexican food, so that wasn’t going to work! Lo suggested Christmas in New York…we both absolutely love New York and it’s a magical city at Christmas, so we ran with it!

It was extremely challenging at times to bring New York to Abbotsford….who knew that you can’t rent a pretzel warmer anywhere from West Vancouver to Hope!!! Dealing with US companies that don’t accept Canadian credit cards (seriously!?!?) and trying to find a chestnut roaster (thanks to Renee for walking around her neighborhood and finding one!) was so frustrating but we refused to give up.

Here are some elements that we used to bring New York to town…

The Statue of Liberty with a wreath in the front yard

We rented the Statue of Liberty from Canam Importique. They rent out movie props.

The Statue of Liberty at night

Lots of extra mini lights

New York style lamp post at the front door

Rockettes!

Jocelyn and Alexis did a great job of greeting the guests

A tourist map of New York doubled as the programme

Here's a closer look....

Food….gourmet hot dog bar, pizzas, pastrami melts and we included favorites from past parties such as grilled veggies, breads with olive tapenade

We set up a 30′ x 20′ tent in the backyard with heaters and park benches to mimic Central Park complete with food vendors (our daughters!) selling roasted chestnuts kept warm in a popcorn maker, garlic roasted almonds and pistachios in a nacho warmer and soft pretzels in a hot dog cooker!!! Yes, we had to think outside the box!

We had two torch heaters in the tent, so the temperature was comfortable

Alexis did a great job of "selling" the soft pretzels from a hot dog warmer!

At the bar, we served Cosmopolitans and Manhattans, along with red and white wine and Pellegrino.

The centrepieces were mini Empire State Buildings that we filled with mini ornaments and battery operated lights.

I ordered the Empire State Buildings online

Entertainment…we wanted to have “street performers” that you might see on the streets of New York. We had a sax player from a local high school playing carols, a b-boy popping on a small dance floor in the tent, and a mime dressed up like a Nutcracker!

Henry, aka "Lux" wowed everyone with his popping

Mom enjoyed Neezar, the mime, dressed as a nutcracker

Door prizes…Dad likes to give out big ones! We gave away a trip for 2 to New York, an iconic Tiffany heart locket necklace and an iPad2 (nothing to do with New York, but who doesn’t want an iPad?)
Dylan’s Candy Bar…it’s one of my favorite places in New York…not only for the candy, but because my daughter’s name is Dylan.

Frozen Hot Chocolate….AfterThoughts not only made specialty coffees but they recreated the amazing frozen hot chocolate from Serendipity3 in New York covered in lots of real whipped cream and shaved chocolate!

Dessert….New York cheesecake of course!! AfterThoughts also created the Empire State Building out of cream puffs, a.k.a. The M-Puffer!!

Jason's Uncle Ron, from AfterThoughts, and Jason, putting the cream puffs on the Empire State Building

All of the preparations were done, so let's enjoy a cream puff and get this party started!

10.  Stila Lip Glaze Set $33  You can purchase this set at Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutiques or Sephora in the US for $25.  We love the great colours and the glaze is not sticky.

11.  How many ladies do you see pull out a tattered, overfull wallet from their handbags?  I’ve been guilty of it!  Wallets are usually one of the last things ladies spend money on, but a good wallet is worth it.  We love these zippered versions because you can carry them as a clutch and you are forced to empty out your receipts regularly!

This Metallic Robinson Zip Continental Tory Burch wallet comes in both silver and gold and is on sale for $157.50 (down from $225).  Silver and gold go with most any handbag! http://www.toryburch.com/METALLIC-ROBINSON-ZIP-CONTINENTAL/12119147,default,pd.html?dwvar_12119147_size=OS&dwvar_12119147_color=040&start=43&cgid=accessories-wallets-wristlets
