Sweet Start ~ A Different Approach to Exercise

Fall is a good time to get back into routine after letting my guard down a little…ok, maybe a lot, during the summer! Hey, summer is about all hanging out with friends and enjoying good food…it’s how we socialize!  And in summer the exercise routine tends to go by the wayside.  I think it’s all good to have a break from the norm but now I’m looking at fall as time to “smarten up”… for the most part….yes, Paris will be a delicious detour!

A few ladies in my life have been talking about  The Body Book by Cameron Diaz.  I’m not a big reader and haven’t read the book…I’m thinking I should.  But what I’m hearing from them is the idea is fairly simple….keep moving!  We have become used to a very sedentary lifestyle here in North America.  We park as close to shops as possible, we take elevators, we shop online…we just don’t move around much!  So this fall I’m trying to make a more conscious effort to move more!! Yesterday we biked as a family to a cafe for coffee…an iced almond milk latte is a great incentive!  Instead of “killing time” while the kids are at hockey practice or pilates, I’ve started planning my errands so that I spend the hour walking, dropping off dry cleaning, picking up veggies, grabbing an Americano.  It takes a wee bit of thought to think about what I need to accomplish and what might be close by, but it’s a great way to get a few things done and get some exercise at the same time. I’ve also been walking the stairs instead of taking the escalator or elevator whenever possible.  Cameron Diaz even talks about doing calf raises while she waits for her coffee at Starbucks.

I am starting back today at Vos Hockey for ladies’ workout!  I can’t imagine how sore I’m going to be, but it will be good to get back into an exercise routine….and I always enjoy the coffee and visit after.  Local sisters…if you are looking for a workout, come and join us!  I think the key to a healthy lifestyle is a combination of “structured” exercise and making the most of shall we call them “exercise opportunities”.

How are you trying to incorporate exercise into your day?  How do you keep moving?  I’d love more ideas!
